Combat B3 Gear Retrofit Baseball Bat Announced Legal on Little League Website

A mysterious new Combat baseball bat has shown up on the approved composite bat list for Little League.

Apparently, Little League contacted Combat and recommended that Combat place a ring inside the barrel of the current Combat B3 Gear in hopes that the retrofit ring would allow the current Combat Gear to pass the strict new Little League composite bat test. Combat made the minor modification as Little League suggested and submitted the Combat B3 Gear Retrofit Baseball Bat for testing where it passed no problem.

As to what happens next, we don’t know. We should have more details on this before April 15th. Combat has not actually said whether this bat will be made or not.

The pictures of the Combat B3 Gear Retrofit look exactly like the current B3 Gear from the picture on Little Leagues website. The similarity of the two Combat Gear bats is most certainly going to lead to confusion among parents and umpires.

DeMarini CF5 Baseball Bat Pictures Are Here

DeMarini CF5 BBCOR Baseball Bat pictures and details have been released.

CheapBats.com broke the news of the new 2012 DeMarini Baseball Bats this morning.

The all new CF5 uses a new composite called “Tru Strut Tr3” that Demarini claims is stronger and lighter than the composite material used on the CF4 last year.  You can see from the pictures below the 2012 DeMarini CF5 End Cap is all new as well, providing a stiffer barrel to make use of the barrel flex provided by the Doublewall and minimize vibration in your hands when contact is made with the ball. The grip is a new color but looks to differ only cosmetically from the current DeMarini Faded Grip. The new 2012 CF5 BBCOR has a double wall barrel that is supposed to add trampoline and “push” the ball off the bat. The 2012 DeMarini CF5 release date will be approximately June, 2011 and is priced at $399.95 (with Free 2nd Day Air from CheapBats.com)

We were very impressed with the 2011 DeMarini Voodoo BBCOR so we are extremely anxious to hit the new 2012 CF5 and see if Demarini was able to bring BBCOR bats to the next level.

Little League Upset at Other Youth Baseball Organizations?

We have heard Little League may be bothered by the lack of ANY other youth baseball organization following their lead when they banned composite bats.

Previously, Little League had researched and adopted baseball bat standards for itself and most other youth leagues. By doing this, everyone was always in agreement of what standards needed to be put in place on bats. Moving forward, Little League may not allow other youth leagues to “piggy back” on all of their work, leaving all the other organizations to fend for themselves and decide what bat standards to enforce and not enforce.

If this happens, it may create two standards of youth baseball bats. One standard for 2 1/4″ Little League baseball bats and another for 2 1/4″ Pony, USSSA, Nations, Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth and Dixie baseball bats.

2012 DeMarini CF5 Hope Fastpitch Softball Bat Announced

Once again Demarini will be realeasing a special Hope version of it’s most popular softball bat.  Demarini will donate a portion of the 2012 Demarini CF5 Hope Softball Bat to fight breast cancer.

Look for the Demarini Hope CF5 softball bat to arrive in stores in late April or early May. The regular version of the Demarini CF5 fastpitch softball bat will arrive in June, 2011. It is exactly the same bat but without the special “Hope” graphics

We will post pictures as soon as we have permission from DeMarini.

[Updated March 29th] Demarini has allowed us to show pictures of the new CF5 softball bat. It will use an all new composite that is the strongest and lightest composite material ever in a softball bat. The larger sweetspot from the new composite in the bat handle and barrel should make the 2012 Demarini CF5 the best softball bat ever made.

All of the 2012 Demarini CF5 Softball Bats will sell for $299.95 (with free 2nd day air shipping from CheapBats.com)

2012 Demarini CF5 Bats

The Demarini CF5 baseball bat for adult, senior youth and fast pitch softball should arrive in late April. The youth Demarini CF5 version appears to be delayed until June.

It will be a 100% composite bat with an improved composite weave that should make it stronger and provide more trampoline effect from the barrel.

Pics and more info to come as soon as DeMarini gives us permission to release them.

[Updated March 29th]

The best upgrade on the new Demarini CF5 is the lighter and stronger composite weave. This means a larger sweetspot and more trampoline from the barrel. Demarini didn’t stop at the barrel, the new end cap is also a leap in technology that uses an odd looking array of triangles to help lessen vibration on the new CF5 bats by focusing that energy back into the barrel (check out our pics below).

The 2012 Demarini CF5 bats should be available the third or fourth week of April, 2011. (All the new CF5 bats come with Free 2nd Day Air shipping from CheapBats.com)

The grip of the new CF5 bats has changed to a gold color and it looks like it has triangles pressed into it.

DeMarini CF4 Approved for Little League Play

Little League approves DeMarini CF4 Composite Baseball Bat (DXCFL) for play in 2011. The waiver test took longer than expected but Demarini has announced that the CF4 will be legal in play this year in Little League.

Demarini has long said they feel their bats would pass any test because they are built to NOT break in.

Little League Composite Barrel Moratorium Update From DeMarini Website: 02/15/2011: Little League Composite Barrel Moratorium Update. Thank you for your patience through this process. As of this morning, the 2011 Little League CF4 (CFL), has passed the waiver process and we have sent the results to be posted on their site.

The Little League Vendetta C6(VCL) did not. If your Little League Vendetta C6 is still within the warranty period and has not used its one time replacement we will offer a Little League CF4 (CFL) as its replacement. The original receipt would be required.

Note: The CF3 is NOT legal for Little League play.

Little League Composite Bat Test Uses Extreme amount of “rolling” to make bats fail

Here is a quote from an official with Little League regarding composite baseball bats that misconstrues the reality of the safety of composite bats.

“The moratorium is not the result of Little League changing its bat standards, nor was it influenced by any relationships with bat manufacturers,” said Patrick W. Wilson, Little League’s vice president of operations.

“The decision to place the moratorium on composite bats in Little League’s baseball divisions is based solely on the fact that scientific research showed that composite-barreled bats may exceed the performance standard that is printed on the bats, after the bats had been broken in.

In fact, Little League DID change it’s bat standards, here is how: The new test Little League uses on a composite bat simulates such an extreme amount of simulated use that the test in no way represents real world use, or even extreme real world use.

The “scientific research” is suspect. Anything altered to a point so far out of the specifications for normal use is going to fail.

We agree that safety in baseball should be Little Leagues number one priority, however a test this extreme is beneficial to nobody and does not use common sense.

Several high end composite baseball bats from Easton and Demarini have passed the waiver test so far.

Combat Issues Response To Little League Bat Ban

Combat is first out of the gate with a plan for Little League bats affected by the recent ban of composite bats in Little League. Combat has initiated a bat replacement program. Combat states they hope to work with Little League to revise the test as it

Combat Announcement re: LLB Moratorium on Youth Composite Bats

Combat Sports Inc., and our affiliated companies, have been designing, manufacturing and selling composite baseball and softball bats since 1998. Our current line-up has composite models in every category of play (from t-ball through all levels of baseball, all levels of fast-pitch and all levels of slow-pitch including senior slow-pitch) and we work very closely with the majority of Associations’ that govern play at every level. Further, Combat Sports respects all Associations’ rights to specify both the bat performance standard and bat test protocol and to change such as determined by those associations. However, with the exception of proven safety concerns, we also believe that any such change should include reasonable “grandfathering” of previously contractually approved bat models in order to prevent undue financial impact to player families, stores and manufacturers.

With regards to the current moratorium imposed by LLB on youth small barrel baseball bats, Combat Sports first received the new test protocol to be used to gain a moratorium waiver on the 14 January 2011. In our opinion, the new protocol represents a significant contractual change and (as reported elsewhere) involves extreme lab rolling. Our opinion is that this new protocol does not ensure that bats that pass will continue to meet BPF 1.15 during normal field use, nor does it ensure that bats that fail would not continue to meet BPF 1.15 during normal field use. Rather, failing the test protocol simply means that such a bat severely rolled exceeds the BPF standard. We have communicated this belief to the various youth associations and will continue to offer constructive inputs to improve the youth bat test protocol.

Important Note: All Combat composite youth bats (small barrel) remain legal for play in the following Associations: Babe Ruth Baseball (including Cal Ripken), Dixie Youth Baseball, Pony Baseball, USSSA, Super Series, etc.

With regards to the current moratorium waiver process, Combat has decided not to submit any further bat models until we have had the opportunity for the Associations’ involved to consider our concerns and constructive inputs regarding the new test protocol. We understand that this decision does not immediately help you, our valued customers, but we believe it is in the best long term interests of the baseball industry.

Shorter term, while unfortunate, accepting returns of all Combat bats impacted by LLB’s moratorium would seriously impact Combat’s ongoing business viability which is not an option.

Additionally, the following has been for a number of years Combat’s publicly stated policy regarding Association bat standard changes:

COMBAT STRIVES TO ENGINEER ITS SOFTBALL AND BASEBALL BATS TO COMPLY WITH CURRENT STANDARDS KNOWN BY VARIOUS GOVERNING ASSOCIATIONS. HOWEVER, COM BAT CANNOT CONTROL CHANGES IN THESE STANDARDS OR THE TESTING PROCEDURES EMPLOYED TO CHECK COM PLIANCE WITH THESE STANDARDS. AS SUCH, WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT OUR BATS WILL REMAIN CERTIFIED AFTER ANY ASSOCIATION MAKES CHANGES TO ITS CERTIFICATION STANDARDS AND/OR PROCEDURES. COM BAT SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES RESULTING FROM ANY BAN IMPOSED ON THE BAT BY ANY ASSOCIATION.

Having considered the above information, and notwithstanding our stated policy above, the following Combat relief plan is designed to lessen undue financial hardship on most of our valued customers:

Check out as we update the list for 2013 BBCOR Baseball Bats

[poll id=”1″]The new BBCOR bats have brought in a new era of baseball bats.  Every bat manufacturer in the country seems to have a BBCOR bat offering, even the smaller bat makers like Marruci and Rip It have introduced a bat with the BBCOR Certification.

We hit every BBCOR bat on the market for three weeks straight at our batting cages.  Combined, we put in over 10,000 swings on these bats. It all came down to sting, vibration and balance of the bat. All BBCOR bats have a smaller barrel than their BESR counter parts. All BBCOR bats feel heavier because more weight is distributed to the end of the barrel.

Here is the ugly truth about BBCOR bats… The “pop” is almost indistinguishable between bats.  However, that is where the similarities end and the testing begins.

There were clear “winners” in the shootout. Not because one bat hit the ball further every time, but because one bat allows you to control the bat better and put the sweet spot on the ball more consistently. While they all hit the ball approximately the same distance, several bats had advantages in comfort and swingability that will ultimately help you be a better hitter.

How the bats differ: Vibration, Sound, Balance (more/less end heavy) and bat control.

One Piece BBCOR Bats:

  • Rip It Prototype 2TOP CHOICE – This BBCOR bat from Rip It was a pleasant surprise and proved to be the top dog in our testing. It hits as hard as any BBCOR on the market. It has good balance, little to no vibration and above average pop. The Rip It Prototype 2 has a VERY LOUD metal “ping”, almost to the point of hurting our ears. With the Rip It “Love it or we’ll buy it back” 30 day guarantee, you have nothing to lose with the Rip It BBCOR bat.
  • Marruci Cat 5 – TOP CHOICE (NOW BANNED in 33″/30oz) – The Marruci BBCOR bat is the lightest feeling bbcor on the market. The Cat 5 has ZERO vibration and swings very well. This bat is as good as the Easton Surge and Demarini Voodoo but sells for $100 less. Hit it and see for yourself.
  • Marucci Team Series – We have not swung the Marucci Team Series BBCOR yet. We will update the site the instant we do.
  • TPX Z1000 – The TPX Z1000 BBCOR is the most balanced bat in the group. Great pop and feel. No vibration at all.
  • TPX Omaha – The Omaha BBCOR bat has a nice grip and does not feel as heavy as other bats but there is a little sting and vibration on mis-hits.
  • Rawlings 5150 / Worth Toxic (Same bat, different name) – Surprisingly, this bat was our second favorite one piece BBCOR bat. It had good balance and very little vibration. The grip is nice and fat too.
  • Rawlings Velo 5150 – The difference between the Velo and the original 5150 is the end cap. For an extra $50 Rawlings will sell you a Velo with an upgraded end cap that actually does reduce vibration and ever so slightly extends the sweet spot.
  • Combat Backbone – A very good practice BBCOR bat but nothing we would ever use in a game. This bat is a great training tool, but do not fool yourself into thinking that this bat is for anything other than practice.
  • Combat B3 – The Combat B3 is another good BBCOR bat with very little vibration and good pop, but we do not like the price. For $50 less the Voodoo is just as good of a baseball bat.
  • Combat 52 CaliberMaybe all of us testers were having a bad day, but the 52 Cal from Combat was stinging our hands like crazy. We are going to retest soon… UPDATE: We swung the same Combat 52 Caliber again today and there was no vibration at all (Did it break in?). It feels similar to the B3AB but stiffer. It is balanced well and swings easy. No complaints here.
  • Combat Classic – This $199 100% composite BBCOR bat is the only minus 3 all composite bat under $349. If you are looking for a value priced 100% composite BBCOR, the Combat Classic is there to fill your need. It is fairly well balanced, but does have a small amount of vibration.
  • Worth Prodigy Legit – Very good bat here. Extremely similar to the Rawlings 5150. A small amount of vibration is felt when swinging, but is to be expected on a one-piece aluminum. Soft, fat grip is comfortable.

Two Piece BBCOR Bats

  • Marucci Black – TOP CHOICE -Marucci Black BBCOR swings pretty well. It is a little more end loaded than the Cat 5, but just barely, and Marucci is still calling the Black a balanced bat. The new AV5 harmonic dampening knob prevents almost all vibration. We had an extremely limited first go around with the new Marucci Black BBCOR, but we just got a 32″/29oz and 33″/30oz in stock to try out. We’ll do a much more in depth review shortly.
  • 2012 Demarini Voodoo – TOP CHOICE – The Voodoo baseball bat was at the top of the list for best BBCOR bat on the market. No vibration, balanced feel and a proven durable alloy. You can’t go wrong with the Demarini Voodoo.
  • 2012 Demarini Vexxum – The Vexxum hits just as hard as the Voodoo (it is made from the same metal after all), but it does have more vibration than a Voodoo BBCOR. If you have the extra $100 go for the Voodoo.
  • 2012 aston S1 – Easton has a winner with the S1 BBCOR. A smooth feel and no vibration to speak of help the Easton S1 rise to near the top of the pack of current bats for High School and College.
  • DeMarini M2M – Untested
  • Rawlings Machine – End loaded with a composite handle and 5150 alloy barrel. If you are a power hitter, and like an end loaded bat, we would suggest the Rawlings Machine.
  • Easton Surge – The Surge by Easton Mako Torq was at the top as well. Just like the Demarini Voodoo, the Easton Surge has zero sting/vibration while the light feel allowed us to swing and control the bat better in order to get the bat through the hitting zone. The Surge BBCOR is a great bat. If you are an Easton fan then this is the Easton BBCOR for you.
  • 2012 PX Exogrid –  TPX Exogrid is another good BBCOR. Aluminum barrel bats seem to be the winners so far in the BBCOR world. As is the case with the Z1000, the Exogrid has little to no vibration and great pop.
  • 2012 Demarini CF5 – Well balanced and great pop. If you love composite bats, the DeMarini CF5 is the baseball bat for you. Like all high end bats, the CF5 has zero vibration and excellent pop. The con is the bat tops out at $400. You will do just as well with a Voodoo at $100 less. When the CF5 goes on sale in April, 2012, you should pick one up.
  • 2013 DeMarini CF5 – Unchanged from 2012 aside from graphics.
  • 2013 DeMarini Voodoo – The composite handle remains unchanged from the 2012 Voodoo. The big change for the 2013 Voodoo BBCOR is a new X10 alloy in the barrel. The 2013 DeMarini Voodoo X10 alloy is stronger than the older, SC4 alloy, allowing DeMarini to make the walls even thinner, while still adhering to BBCOR standars.
  • 2013 DeMarini M2M – The M2M BBCOR gets the new, stronger X10 alloy (just like the  2013 Voodoo and 2013 Vexxum). Because the handle is metal, the 2013 M2M is stiffer and provides more feedback to the batter.
  • 2013 DeMarini Vexxum – For 2013, the Vexxum gets the new X10 alloy. Exclusive to DeMarini, the X10 alloy in the barrel is stronger and lighter than the 2012 SC4 alloy. Expect better balance, thinner walls and a small jump in performance from the 2013 DeMarini Vexxum BBCOR. Also, added for 2013 is the N2M end cap, which decreases vibration.
  • Combat Grifter – The Grifter from Combat has a small barrel, and you can tell just by looking at it. We are not impressed.
Check out our breakdown of the 2012 Easton Power Brigade BBCOR bats.
Special thank you to Home Run Park batting cages in Anaheim, CA for letting us use their 90 MPH batting cages to try out our BBCOR bats.

RE: Composite Bats- Cal Ripken Division

Babe Ruth League, Inc. is lifting the moratorium on composite bats for the Cal Ripken Division effective immediately.  This applies only to the 2 ¼” barrel bats.

All bats must be stamped “Approved For Play in Babe Ruth Baseball” and meet the requirement of Rule 1.10 in the Babe Ruth League, Inc. 2011 Baseball Rules and Regulations for 2 ¼” baseball bats.

Note:  The Babe Ruth 13-15 and 16-18 Baseball age divisions will continue to have the moratorium in force as explained in the memo dated October 26, 2010.  As was stated in this memo, all approved composite bat models for the Babe Ruth 13-15 and 16-18 Baseball Divisions are listed at www.nfhs.org.
